What is Saxonette?
The Saxonette, also known as the ‘Claribel’ or ‘Clariphon’, is a soprano clarinet available in C, A, or Bâ™ configurations. Distinctive for its curved barrel and upturned metal bell, it resembles a saxophone in shape but features a cylindrical bore and overblows by a twelfth rather than an octave. Initially introduced by the Buescher Band Instrument Company as the “Clariphon” between 1918 and 1921, these instruments are primarily constructed in the simple (Albert) system, with most examples found in C. Variants in Bâ™ and A keys exist, and there are even examples using the Boehm system, although documentation is limited. Concurrently, J.W. Pepper produced similar models under the brand name “Claribel”.
