About Seagull Guitars History (source from seagullguitars.com) In 1982 Robert Godin and a few friends produced the first Seagull guitars in the Village of La Patrie, Quebec. The concept for the Seagull guitar was to take the essential components of the best hand-crafted guitars (such as solid tops and beautiful finishes) and build these features into guitars that could be priced within the reach of working musicians. A few years ago, the Godin Guitar Company opened the Godin Acoustic Studio—a workshop dedicated to the development of new acoustic guitar designs and construction techniques. Since the inception of the “Studio” Robert Godin has been working with several of the company’s top luthiers on a series of projects that have culminated in complete re-design of the company’s Seagull acoustic guitars. Robert explains: “Our motivation for this project was to create a new acoustic design that would simultaneously improve sound and structural integrity. As a general rule better sound comes with more delicate construction. Conversely, stronger construction, such as thicker tops and heavier bracing, stifles the sound.”

The Compound Curve Top The guitar top is the part of the instrument that most affects the sound. It is also the most delicate part of any high quality acoustic guitar. The grade and thickness of the wood used (solid cedar or spruce), as well as the bracing structure, have a huge impact on the instrument’s sound. The idea of applying an arch or a curve to the top is appealing because the added strength of an arched top should allow for the use of a thinner and more lightly braced top. While this is true, there remains a trade-off in applying a curve to the entire top. The most active part of the top is the area centered on the bridge. Applying a curve to this part of the top restricts movement resulting in a loss of dynamic range. On the other hand, the area of the top above the sound hole moves minimally but is problematic because it tends to sink if the guitar dries out even slightly. This tendency is also encouraged by downward pressure from the fingerboard resting on top of it. The solution is a top that has a compound curve. In this design the top is arched slightly in the area above the sound hole and levels out in the area around the bridge. The compound curve top produces excellent stability in the upper part of the guitar top and the power and projection made possible by leaving the top flat below the sound hole flat. With the weak area above the sound hole stabilized, it is possible to make the rest of the top even more active with a new bracing design that allows unprecedented control over the top vibration. The bracing for the new Seagull guitars is quarter-sawn spruce, scalloped and carved to conform exactly to the curvature of the tops. The perfect neck angle Neck angle has a tremendous effect on guitar tone. The Seagull re-design served as the impetus for several refinements to Godin’s neck matching technology. Bodies and necks are now matched with incredible precision and the new compound curve in the top provides the additional stability necessary to achieve and maintain optimum neck pitch.

Coastline Cedar Burst Gloss Top There is something classic about a sunburst finish on an acoustic guitar and it has always been a popular choice around here. The burst finish exudes some of the flash of the various brightly colored acoustics that are available these days but does so using earthy colors that retain the natural look of wood. An early version of this guitar looked great with a semi-gloss finish, but the GT version is stunning. The GT is also noteworthy because it delivers its high gloss luster in a Custom Polished finish that is as light as our semi-gloss treatment. About La Patrie Guitars There is a small quiet village in the eastern townships of Quebec that has been the backbone of guitar building in Canada for over 30 years. This village of guitar builders is dedicated to the art & tradition of hand crafting guitars. This is the village of LaPatrie… and these are their guitars. All LaPatrie guitars feature select pressure tested solid cedar tops. Graded and tested for their excellence and structural integrity, this method of pressure testing each solid top ensures the highest levels of stiffness and rigidity along with maximum harmonic vibration. This benefits the overall tone, projection and resonance of these finely crafted instruments. The wood used in these tops can be found only in previously fallen cedar trees that have an average age of about 800 years. Characteristically speaking, this wood features a tight straight grain, which produces greater rigidity while at the same time is flexible across the grain lines. LaPatrie guitars also feature a Custom Polished finish, which is reminiscent of the French polish of the 19th Century. This Custom Polished Finish, as opposed to "thick" polyester finishes, allows the top not only to be protected but also to breathe and vibrate freely allowing the effective and very important “aging” process to take its course. This “aging” process means that every LaPatrie acoustic guitar will actually sound better and better the more it’s played over time.





The necks on LaPatrie guitars are carved from Honduras mahogany and feature an innovative double-function truss rod system not generally found in traditional classical guitars. This system allows the profile of the neck to be reduced producing a neck of extraordinary comfort, while increasing stability. Each LaPatrie nylon string guitar is finished off with an intricate rosette, cream binding, rosewood fingerboard and bridge as well as Tusq nuts and fully compensated saddles by Graphtech.
